Monte Cristo Sandwich

Updated: Jan 22, 2019

A slightly different version of French croque-monsieur is Monte Cristo Sandwich. This is a fried ham and cheese sandwich and quite a meal in itself.

I been wanting to make this for quite sometime. The challenge was to find an unsliced bread loaf and it was literally hard to find, until this morning. No sooner did I get the loaf, rest ingredients were already in the pantry.

A very easy to make sandwich, loaded with protein too. Works perfectly well on a day when there is no big plans for lunch. What you see on the image here is good for tomorrow too :)

Allow me to share my recipe to make Monte Cristo sandwich

Ingredients:

- 02 eggs lightly beaten with a pinch of cinnamon powder, one tablespoon of milk and few granules of salt

- 3 pieces of toast. slightly thicker slices. Milk bread is just perfect (I keep the edges but if you like, you may cut them off)

- 2 tablespoon of mayonnaise with one teaspoon of mustard sauce mixed

- 03 pieces of fat free ham (you may use chicken breast or turkey ham too)

- 200gms of Mozzarella cheese (cheddar or emmental cheese or gouda as option)

- One tablespoon of butter

Methods:

1 - Apply mayonnaise and mustard mix to all the sliced toast

2 - Place pieces of ham on 2 of the toast and top it with cheese. Place these 2 on top of each other. Top piece having base on the cheese on the lower slice

3 - Now on the third slice top with cheese and then piece of ham. Now close the third slice with the ham side on the lower slice making it a sandwich. Place a flat dish on the sandwich and press it down gently to compress the sandwich

4 - Now pick the sandwich and coat the slices in the egg mixture. Spread the egg mixture in a deep broad dish so dunking the sandwich is easy

5 - Now heat up the pan, add butter and let it melt. Place the sandwich in the pan and cook all sides until they have a brown color. You may need 2 spatulas to hold and turn (its an art)
